Evaluation

In what ways does your media products use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When analysing products from the same genre [alternative rock], I found that they each have elements that are typical of these products. We took these into account and used them in our own product. I found that in all the alternative rock music videos as well as Muse videos I analysed they always seemed to follow a pattern of shots that included a live performance of the band as well as a storyline. The bands always had a typical image which was recognisable among its target audience and generally seemed to fall under the 'indie' label, this of which I noted previously. Noticing that these were very typical we encorperated them into our product, using people we felt that were suitable for our band and would represent the look we were going for. We used shots of a live performance and came up with a storyline which we filmed and used both these to make up our final video. The live performance was made energetic to fit in with the style of the song, as Muse do in the original video.

I noticed that Muse tend to stick to dark, mysterious storylines and their videos seemed to use a gloomy sort of colour scheme and general visuals, whereas in other alternative rock music videos it did not always follow this pattern. As we were doing muse we decided to use this element, choosing an 'odd' storyline and using certain props to give our location a certain feel and our main character a certain image. The storylines Muse use arent always entirely clear and you may have to watch them a few times as they tend to have hidden meanings. We also used these elements. We wanted to give our main character a sort of 'rough' look, making the bedroom scene look trashy with lots of empty alchohol bottles, ciggeratte packets etc. During the film we tried to make it so the character was almost going 'insane', when 'time is running out' appears on his arms and on the mirror. We also used lots of effects to show this, speeding things up and reversing things making it look mixed up, as if you were seeing from his point of view. We also used a black and white filter on the indoor scenes, as if showing his mindset in a dark, unclear way. I think with using the props and how the character seems to be acting in a strange way links together to show the sort of image we are trying to put across.

Even though Muse videos generally tend to include elements of space in their products, this was the only convention of a typical Muse video we did not use. As we came up with our storyline and filmed it, we decided that it wouldnt fit in at any point during the video. Instead we used this on our digipack so it would follow the Muse theme. We noticed that adverts and digipaks tend to link to songs, using images from the videos on their other products. This of which would be recognisable to fans, as I noted previously about Muse fans being extremely dedicated. We decided that the shot in the video when 'Time is running out' appears on his arms would be a memorable shot as it focuses on this alot at this point, and links to the feeling the video brings. It also gave the mysterious effect that alot of Muse products have. However, we decided make it a Muse 'Greatest Hits' album, and as we focused of 'time is running out' we used the image of the arms but lots of different muse songs were written instead of the one. As we also decided to follow the 'time is running out' theme, we used pictures of clocks on our digipak but used images of stars, planets and other elements of space to create this individual look, yet at the same time is typically Muse.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

I think that the whole package is quite effective in promoting the album. This is because they all have similar elements and relate to each other in a way that would appeal to the target audience. By using the image arms from the video on both the digipak and advert it is both recognisable and noticiable and as is a main point in the video. A mentioned previously this is typical to use images from the video on both the advert and digipak also, not just from Muse but other alternative rock music bands that I have analysed. However I think that the fact we used images of space on our digipak is the thing in which makes this appeal mostly to Muse fans, as it is used in every single one of their products therefore it is clear that it is something associated with them. We encorperated this into the visual images from the song to give it more of an individual look, and at the same time would be expected of a Muse product.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

All together, we didn't get a huge amount of feedback dispite the different ways we presented our video. However, all feedback seemed positive. On youtube be recieved one comment which is shown on our video link. I also posted the video on facebook a number of times asking for feedback, from this it did recieve a number of 'likes' as well as comments. As well as getting feedback from the internet I also asked my friends and family in person to watch and tell me what they thought.

The feedback was mostly from fans of alternative rock and a couple were Muse fans also. I thought by asking these sorts of people they would know what a typical video would be like. It wasn't done purposly either as I also assumed that people that liked that sort of music would most likely watch the video rather than people who didn't listen to that music.

The main comments were on the storyline and the props that we used, saying that we made good use of them and it fitted in well with the song. Comments were also made on the acting and the band performance, even though i thought these could be improved the smallest bit, feedback said it was good and made the video look realistic.

Even though all the comments seemed mostly positive, the only thing that was said that needed to be improved was the use of the green screen in the band shots. I picked up on this as when editing we found that it was difficult to use, and we didn't stick to our original plan as it didn't turn out how we wanted. In the band shots we originally wanted 'Time is running out' to be written all over the walls but instead we just kept it black. I think the reason it didn't turn out as well as we thought is because none of us in the group were entirely sure how to use it or had never used it before. However, this feedback has shown us that we should have stuck to a more simpler idea and maybe should not have gone for something we weren't very sure on. In the end I do belive it looked okay, but definatley shows our weaker areas when we were shooting and editing our film.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

We used a huge range of technology to help us with our media project. Social networking sites such as facebook and youtube were used, not just to promote our video but we used facebook often to get into contact with each other, and created a group on it which included just our group, so we could discuss any ideas or such if we had any. We also created an account on a Muse forum so we could get into contact with any other Muse fans, such as sending us things for our audience research. However, this was unsucessful as no one got into contact with us on the forum. http://board.muse.mu/

Hardware was also used. This included computers to help us with our research and planning as well as getting into contact with each other, and all the filming equipment of which made our video possible. We also exchanged numbers at the start of the project so we could get into contact with each other quick and easy.

Filming tommorrow, here is our shooting schedule.

Locations, Props.

This week we have managed to book the photography and green screen room at York College. I believe they are suitable places to film our music video.

Shooting in the green screen room will help us in our editing and help us create different backgrounds that our 'band' will be performing in. We will be able to make it look as if 'time is running out' is written all over the walls without going to much effort. The room is also spacious and allows us to have the 'energetic' performance of what we want our band to have. We have access to suitable instruments such as guitar and drums which are used in this genre of music, and will use these in our video to make the 'band' look realistic.

The photography studio is also suitable as we are able to manipulate lighting to give it the 'grim' look which suits the location we are trying to make it look like.

storyboards, planning etc.

1. In a 'bedroom' scene. First shots are a close ups of a wall clock, alarm clock followed by a wrist watch all displaying the same time. Shots will follow after each other to the beat of the very beginning of the song. It then goes to a long shot of a man waking up in bed, from this point the singing in the song starts.

' I think i'm drowing
asphyxiated
I wanna break this spell
that you've created...'

We decided to make the 'bedroom' scene deliberatly untidy, and make the man look 'rough'. He would be sleeping with only a blanket and rubbish would be scattered about the place. By placing a black and white filter over this, we can give this 'grim' image. I belive this fits in with the dark and mysterious style and colour schemes muse use in alot of their videos, and fits with the song. We decided it would look like a strange location which is different, and this fits in with the fact that Muse tend to base their videos in strange locations. Its general style will give the viewer and impression on what type of character the man is and help them understand the storyline which I will explain going on...
2. Long shot as the man walks into the bathroom and looks at himself in the mirror, he looks tired and drawn. At this point there is a closeup of his face, then going out to a medium shot as he splashes his face with water as if to 'wake him up'. This is followed by an over the shoulder shot, the man looks in the mirror and sees a dark, hooded character standing behind him, staring at him. This continues with the mysterious feeling.

'You're something beautiful
a contradiction
I want to play the game
I want the friction...'
3. Still in the bathroom, there is a medium shot of the man looking in the mirror looking back at the character.
'You will be the death of me
you will be the death of me'
This is followed by an over the shoulder shot of the character walking away.
'Bury it
I won't let you bury it...'
The man looks confused but not shocked, as if he has seen the character before.
'I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it...'
He looks down and has the words 'time is running out' written all over his arms. Close up of him arms showing the writing.
Throughout the video we will try make the character look as if it is actually there but is actually all in the mans head. We will give the impression that the guy is having hallucinations of this 'dark figure' and that it is somewhat controlling him. From the 'rough' image we have built of him at the start, viewers could have the impression that it is from an illness or from drug use.

' Our time is running out
our time is running out'

4. The man suddenly falls to the floor, his head in his hands. The words 'time is running out' are written all over the walls. It is then followed by a shot of a band performing the song energetically, as muse do in the original song. In this location the words 'time is running out' are written all over the walls also.
'You can't push it underground
you can't stop it screaming out'

5. The band carry on playing, while swiching to shots of the man looking around at the walls. It is almost as if the man can't escape this 'feeling' he's having.
'I wanted freedom
bound and restricted
I tried to give you up
but i'm addicted'

6. Long shot as he begins to tear down the words. Goes to a medium shot of him falling to the floor with his head in his hands, the paper all around him. Again the hooded figure appears behind him, he doesn't notice but senses it.
'Now that you know I'm trapped
sense of elation
you'd never dream of
breaking this fixation'

'You will squeeze the life out of me'

7. Close up goes to a clock on the wall, the numbers and hands begin to 'fall off' as if the clock is melting, as the man has teared down all the words from the walls.

'Bury it
I won't let you bury it
I won't let you smother it
I won't let you murder it'

8. Switches to various shots of the band performing again. Then switches to shot of the man sitting down with two 'dancers' either side of him. They appear to be attached to his arms with black ribbon, pulling him side to side going with the music. This again gives the impression that he is being 'controlled' and that he can't fight it. We decided to show this psysically as it is clear in what we are trying to show. We also thought it would be a good idea as Muse have used backing dancers in their videos before so tell their storyline, for example in the original 'time is running out' video.
'Our time is running out
our time is running out
you can't push it underground
you can't stop it screaming out
how did it come to this?'

9. His phone begins to ring and 'time is running out' is displayed on the screen, he answers and starts to talk to someone, the hooded figure is stood in the background again.
The man dissapears, and the dark figure lowers his hood. It appears that it is him himself that is acting as the hooded figure.
Repeat chorus.

Advert.

We decided that we would advertise Muse's greatest hits. As most bands tend to use to main image of the digipak as the advert also, we decided to do this.
We noticed that on alot of Muse's album covers they tend to use shots or images from their music videos, so we used the shot of the arms we are planning to do on our video. However on this it would display the names of Muse songs that have been released. Using a greyish colour scheme also, it would follow the theme we have been using throughout.
We also decided that the 'Time is running out' theme would be a good idea as fans would recognise it easily, as it is also a well known Muse song. We also included the Muse logo, as Muse use this on every single album cover they have made and again would be recognisable to fans.

As I have mentioned in previous posts that Muse tend to use space as a huge influence in their music we also decided to include this in our digipak artwork as you can see. Again using the time is running out theme, we merged the space theme with it creating a unique design. I beleive this would be a suitable style for a Muse digipak.

primary and secondary audience research

A typical muse fan would generally have the 'indie' look. The look is usually based on medium length messy hair and formal but stylish clothing. This is usually a suit or a shirt. As you can see, the style is very much based on the band members of alternative rock music groups. I noticed this when studying bands from this genre. As I was studying Muse, I noticed that they have also adopted a similar look which you can see from pictures I have posted previously.

As we have been planning our music video, we have decided on who will form our 'band'. The three people that will make up our Muse are all into different types of rock music themselves therefore all adopting a similar look which is similar to this 'indie' one. We decided they would be suitable as they all play instruments that are suitable for this genre eg. guitar and drums. This would give a more realistic performance. Each person will be wearing their own style of clothing. The fact they are all into this style of music helps us as it is a suitable look for our band.

As well as following the style Muse have, Muse fans also appear to be extremely dedicated as from doing more research I have come across fans that have gone as far as getting Muse tattoos.

Less extreme forms of dedication include artwork of which fans may do, or may take time out to make music videos themselves, acting out muse or just putting photos of muse with their music. Since planning and researching our video, to help with our audience research we actually signed up to the muse forum shown here http://muse.mu/ and posted asking if any fans could send us any videos or artwork. However, at the moment we have been unsucessful as we haven't had any replies. But, just from looking on youtube, their are a large amount of videos made from fans when just typing in 'Muse'.

I noticed that fans tend to be fond of the Muse logo. This of which is very recognisable as they have used it on every single album cover and single.

We also managed to interview someone who is a huge fan of Muse, this of which also helped us with our audience research. Later on I will post this video.
